At Robert Bowman Modern we are excited to be holding our third solo show of new work by the acclaimed sculptor Helaine Blumenfeld from the 6th May until the 25th June.

Helaine, known as a virtuoso carver of marble, will also be exhibiting some of her small limited edition works in bronze. In 2008 Helaine won the “Il Premio Pietrasanta e la Versilia Nel Mondo”, adding her name to the list of winners of this honour including Fernando Botero, Arnaldo Pomodoro and Marc Quinn. In the fifteen years since the prize was established, Helaine is the first woman to receive this prestigious award. Her work has been hailed by the Financial Times as ‘The Henry Moores of the future’.

Helaine’s most recent commissions include the Cass Sculpture Foundation at Goodwood, UK for a 3.7m marble sculpture, the first monumental marble they have ever commissioned.

Please email us at modern@robertbowman.com if you would like to receive a copy of the hardback exhibition catalogue.

TEFAF Maastricht 2010

This year’s TEFAF Maastricht was our most successful ever. On the opening night we had several sales and interest throughout the following ten days was consistent, with sales almost every day. On the final Sunday we sold the important Monumental Torso by Rodin (illustrated right) which, to be frank, we were sorry to see go, as its breath-taking power and beauty never seem to diminish.

Another favourite work to sell was the rare Rodin figure of She Who Was Once the Helmet Maker’s Wife (illustrated left). While discussing the piece with a client Michele noticed how the shadow thrown by the rear view showed the silhouette of a beautiful young woman—yet one more stroke of genius in this sculpture which for us is one of his most poignant and powerful works.

This year the gallery will be participating in Masterpiece Fair 24–29th June (preview 23rd June) which promises to be a very different type of exhibition.

Set in the grounds of the former Chelsea Barracks on Chelsea Bridge Road, the fair will be a showcase for the most covetable objects in the world: traditional and modern, old and new, from the finest of fine and decorative art to the best of wines, classic cars, jewellery and contemporary design.

The gallery will be exhibiting sculptures by Auguste Rodin, Barbara Hepworth, Jacob Epstein, Kenneth Armitage, Helaine Blumenfeld, Hanneke Beaumont and Maurice Blik.

TEFAF MAASTRICHT 2009

AIDA
Pietro Calvi

This year's TEFAF opened with some trepidation as we were naturally worried about the effect of the world wide recession, however we did not have one single discussion about the credit crunch, which was very refreshing!

THE TRAVELER
Ernest Meissonier

The only reference to losses in the stock market were from clients who remarked: "I just wish I had bought some sculptures that I really liked on your stand over the years, instead of investing so heavily in the markets. I would then have had something lovely to look at and a valuable asset."

Notable sales this year included The Traveler by Ernest Meissonier (left), The Hand of the Pianist by Auguste Rodin, Aida by Pietro Calvi (above right), and the Abduction of Hippodamie by Rodin & Carrier Belleuse.

TEFAF 2009 Opening Evening

THE ATHLETE
Auguste Rodin

Last night marked the opening of the annual TEFAF art fair in Maastricht, The Netherlands. The fair opened with a large and excited group of art lovers. There was that special mix of museum curators, international art collectors and the cream of European society.

Our stand this year was a return to our Romantic roots in response to the demand from our regular TEFAF patrons for more works from the 19th century.

THE TRAVELER
Ernest Meissonier

As usual our works by Auguste Rodin were greatly admired, especially the cast of the American Athlete, one of the earliest casts of this subject.

The sales highlight of the opening proved to be the cast of The Traveller or Marshal Ney by Meissonier, well known by Europeans familiar with the original wax in the Musee D'Orsay, and by Americans for the cast in the National Gallery in Washington (cast Number 31). Bought by a regular customer of the gallery who has always admired the example in the National Gallery, our cast Number 27 proved too much of a temptation.

The fair continues until 22nd of March.
