Georg Scheele was born in Frankfurt in 1961. He had his first contact with stone in 1980 when he became an apprentice in a stone workshop, learning his trade as a stonemason. This experience provided him with a strong basis to his craftsmanship on which his sculpture has developed.
On completion of his apprenticeship Scheele went on to explore the possibilities of stone in his own way. When he was 25 he visited Monichue with his wife Uscha and on an impulse they acquired they acquired a piece of land with a small house clinging to the side of the mountain in an isolated spot beyond Alferce. It was here and on escaping urban Germany Scheele began to carve in marble which was easily available and a material he knew well. His need to express himself in a completely free manner inevitably led him to abstract forms, yet there is a close relationship to nature that gives life and warmth.
Scheele is masterful at evoking sleek, sensual movement in his sculpture. The organic forms twist and tuck, reach and ripple. Each solid marble block is truly transformed in his hands. He releases the best qualities of the medium, adding depth and beauty to the forms he creates, communicating a feeling of something eternal, its translucence enhancing the liquidity of the forms. The overall effect is an ethereal quality.
