Fratin's work was extremely popular in Europe, America and especially England. Records show that at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 he was acclaimed as 'the greatest animal sculptor of his day'. In his own country he was considerably successful, winning prizes at exhibitions and receiving private commissions and State commissions for work for public places in Paris and his home town.
